About Deep Creek Middle School

Located in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, Deep Creek Middle School is an independent school for Bahamian students in grades seven through nine. Our mission is to provide a nurturing community that engages students with opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom.  This promotes academic growth and responsible citizenship to prepare students to be the future leaders of The Bahamas. Our vision is to create a learning environment where students will not only learn the subject matter from The Bahamian national curriculum, but focus on academic growth, leadership, andresponsible citizenship.  In order to achieve these core values, our programs and curriculum teach critical thinking, problem solving, communication and social skills.

Position Summary: Deep Creek Middle School Teaching Intern 

Deep Creek Middle School is seeking a highly motivated candidate for an unpaid teaching internship to work collaboratively with a dedicated group of colleagues and students in a flexible, team-oriented environment. In your role, you must be willing to stretch live and work closely with the local community and Cape Eleuthera Foundation. Our faculty demonstrates resourcefulness by designing curriculum, developing partnerships within the local and Foundation community and engaging families to support the mission of DCMS. Those who intern with our high-functioning team will be committed to achieving the goals of DCMS and the Cape Eleuthera Foundation with everyone in our community. 

In this position, you will observe and gain familiarity with a variety of instructional strategies in a range of classes. Extra study will be required to gain familiarity with the national curriculum, core values and best practices of the school.  At a minimum you will co-teach one class with middle school appropriate pedagogy that uses the real world concepts, skills and values that the students will need to be successful community members. Additionally, you will design one project-based unit with experiential components for independent implementation.  You will also help staff afterschool, weekend or evening tutoring, and sports or literacy programs for the community two days a week.  You will be a full-member of staff with the expectations of a full-time teacher and responsibilities that increase with experience. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Education, Science or related field
  • Experience working with middle, high school or elementary age students
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Creative problem solver
  • Flexible, adaptable, and resourceful 
  • Ability to live and work in a remote location within a small diverse community
  • Athletic and outdoor interests in swimming, snorkeling, camping, running, kayaking
