Mr. Brad Ferguson - Religious Knowledge

Pastor Brad, a native of Eleuthera, grew up in Rock Sound where he attended Rock Sound Primary and Preston H. Albury High School. He completed his pastoral training and exams in Nassau at the Church of God Convention Center. He has served as the pastor of the Church of God in Weymss Bight for nearly five years and teaches Sunday school there. He shares his passion for music with his congregation playing guitar, drums, and bass with the church band during services and teaching youth to play. In his second year at DCMS, Pastor Brad enjoys shooting hoops with the students before school and teaching the Religious Knowledge curriculum in a middle school classroom setting. |

Ms. Nell Gluckman - Social Studies, Community Outreach and Physical Education

Ms. Gluckman is from New York City and received her degree in Anthropology and Art History at George Washington University. In the spring of 2010, Ms. Gluckman worked as a teaching intern at DCMS, during which she co-taught Social Studies, Community Outreach and received instruction in teaching from the DCMS staff. She is now thrilled to be able to take on the Social Studies curriculum and continue to keep students up to date on current events. Ms. Gluckman was introduced to Eleuthera through her work with Swim to Empower, where she worked as a swim instructor and helped conduct research on swimming ability for the organization. |

Dr. Joanna Paul - Principal

Originally from London but raised in California, Dr. Paul, has a doctorate in international education from the University of London, a masters in educational leadership from California State University Northridge and a bachelors in Secondary education from the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a social studies and English teacher, an assistant principal at the first charter middle school in Los Angeles and the principal of an environmentally themed public school in South L.A. Dr. Paul has also taught education courses at several universities and served as the executive director of the oldest outdoor education non-profit in California.
Dr. Paul plays a diverse leadership role in the Cape Eleuthera Foundation. Her primary function is to ensure standards and accountability for the operations at Deep Creek Middle School by guiding the vision of the school, reviewing programs for quality and assisting with strategic planning. She runs the day-to-day operations of the school, mentors new faculty, assists with community relations and parent outreach and supervises curriculum design. Special projects include boarding school placement, organizing education conferences, green school initiatives, and board recruitment. For the larger organization, Dr. Paul supports development initiatives, admissions and placements and advises on specific business and administrative tasks associated with the grantee programs.

Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, Ms. Pretty is thrilled to now call Eleuthera home. Ms. Pretty completed her Bachelors of Arts at Concordia University where she studied Applied Human Sciences, a multi-disciplinary educational experience where psychology, sociology, and anthropology are integrated in applied situations. In 2009, she completed her Bachelors of Education, with a specialization in Global Perspectives Education. While completing her studies, Ms. Pretty worked in the fields of community health promotion and youth leadership development in a number of different communities: from Montreal to Alaska, France to Belize and Togo to Hawaii. This work helped to feed some of her greatest passions: travel, social justice learning, and working with young adults. Aside from her classes Ms. Pretty supports curriculum & programs development, is a coach in our after school tutoring program, and is the teacher advisor for our Eco-Club.

Will Simmons is a native of Harbour Island, North Eleuthera. He attended school and university in the UK, Ireland and Canada and earned his BA at The University of London in Social Anthropology and International Development Studies. Mr.Simmons is passionate about education, social change and the preservation of the cultural and ecological heritage of the Bahamas. He is an active member of the community in Eleuthera, he taught reading for Exceptional Education Outreach, an Eleuthera based literacy organization that works in public schools across the island and he has run drama and after-school tutoring programs at the Harbour Island All age School for the past several years. Mr. Simmons has an extensive background in theatre and started 'Space To Create' a very successful summer arts education and youth leadership program that has run in Harbour Island for the past 5 years and enrolls over 90 children. He is eager to be a part of the exciting and progressive approaches to education at DCMS and to spend time in South Eleuthera. |

Mr. Copeland Smith - Mathematics

Mr. Smith, a former financial auditor in the United States, returned home to The Bahamas in the beginning of 2009 with plans to impart the knowledge and experiences he acquired abroad to the education field. Upon his return, he has had the opportunity to act as a financial adviser, consultant, and also worked as an Accounting Instructor at Omega College. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting at Caldwell College and has plans to pursue a Doctorate Degree in Education. Upon hearing of DCMS Mr. Smith immediately connected with the philosophy of supporting sustainable development. Mr. Smith considers himself to be a proud Bahamian, a thinker, a writer, an actor, an artist and athlete, a leader, and an educator. He intends to support DCMS by combining environmental stewardship, sustainable development and connecting students’ with their environment to satisfy the mathematics program and the national curriculum. He will also serve as a coach in after-school sports, tutoring and adult programs. Mr. Smith is excited to be teaching the future leaders of The Bahamas. |

Ms. Jennifer Stone - English

Ms. Stone is thrilled to be teaching English at Deep Creek Middle School. She grew up in Stanford, California, and then moved to New York City to attend New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. At Gallatin she designed her own concentration in philosophy and social justice, and studied abroad in Johannesburg, South Africa. After college, Jennifer moved to Portland, Oregon, where she student taught ninth grade English at the Spanish English International School while getting her Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis & Clark College. She is passionate about education rooted in justice and joy, and can't wait to learn from and with her students. |

Mrs. Walker is excited to be teaching Science at Deep Creek Middle School. She hails from beautiful Harbour Island. In 2001, she graduated from Harbour Island All Age School and later received her bachelors of education from the College of the Bahamas in biology and combined science. She has been teaching science in multiple government schools in The Bahamas for the past five years and recently completed her certification as an ESL/EFL instructor. Mrs. Walker was drawn to the exciting and innovative teaching principles at DCMS and their focus on Leadership, responsible citizenship and academic growth. Privileged to be here at DCMS and more importantly on the island of Eleuthera, she is prepared to learn and teach in this nurturing community focused on building a better Bahamas ONE CHILD AT A TIME! |
