Basketball Jamboree

DCMS puts physical activity high on its priority list, and as a result we organized a basketball event where visiting teams could travel to us, the student government could raise some money and the community of Deep Creek could be featured on a fun-filled day. This event is a partnership with The Island School and Deep Creek Primary School, with their students coming to play, watch the games and enjoy the festivities.

Walkathon

Each year we have an event where the students raise money by walking the five miles between DCMS and The Island School campus. We leave at the crack of dawn so we can beat the hot sunshine, and walk, bike and run along the windy coastal road towards a delicious breakfast made by the kitchen ladies at TIS. Last year we raised over $1,500 for graduation and school resources. The Walkathon is usually held in early March!

Guest Speakers

Many dynamic speakers come to visit DCMS because of its relationship to the Cape Eleuthera community. Speakers have included Robert Bateman, Dr. Jennifer Galvin, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Arlene Nash Ferguson, Philip Miller, Livingston Marshall, Kenny Thompson, Carnetta Ferguson and local Member of Parliament, The Right Honourable Oswald Ingraham. DCMS also brings in groups and individuals to add to our academic programs. We have had theater workshops, singing groups, Island School teachers and students, Cape Eleuthera Foundation staff and local speakers come to teach our students about their experiences and expertise. All of these presentations are open to the public.

We have identified ways that our students can learn from hands on activities within the Cape Eleuthera Foundation. Island School science teachers have taught classes for the grade eight students on vegetation and identification. Cape Eleuthera Institute science experts have taught lessons on mangroves to some of our DCMS students. The students are to learn first-hand about the mangrove ecosystem and each of them is given the chance to plant their own propogules. In Fall of 2007, The Island School aquaponics student research group came to DCMS to help us set up an aquaponics system on the DCMS campus. With ongoing regulating by our science teacher, Mrs. Kate Siener, the system is a success.

Halloween Party

Every year The Island School students host a Halloween party for the middle school students. The tricks and treats are always bigger and better each year. We played zombie tag, gave out candy, told ghost stories and went on a ‘Creek Haunted Walk’. You could hear the screams of fear and laughter blocks away. At the end of it all many students said “that was WAY more fun than last year!”

PTA Fundraisers

Our parent-teacher association, led by our president Mr. Dwayne Seymour, is a very strong fundraising force for DCMS. In 2006, they held a ‘Steak Out’ in Rock Sound where they raised over $1800.00 for a digital camera, a photocopier and a school garden. Having the parents involved at DCMS is very important to us, and we appreciate the support that they give us. This year, they are fundraising for a half basketball court. The students can’t wait to start playing.

Community Wide Book Club

This summer, our staff and the entire student body read The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill. This is a story about a pair of middle school-aged students and their business idea. It encompasses our school values of integrity, academic growth, responsible citizenship and leadership. The students (and teachers) really enjoyed reading it, and it has been the topic of one of our community meetings already this year.
