Teaching at the Deep Creep Middle School

DCMS opened its doors in 2001, growing out of The Island School's Community Outreach Program that works with local Bahamian children. We work very closely with The Island School, Cape Eleuthera Institute and Cape Systems. This means anything from the staff socializing together, collaborating on instructional projects together, sharing resources and working and learning together. It is a wonderful community!

The Deep Creek Middle School prepares a group of about 40 Bahamian students in grades 7-9 for the Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination offered by the Bahamas Ministry of Education. The students thrive when supported with their individual skill building on academic, life-skill, and interpersonal fronts. Parents choose DCMS over local public schools because there is a lower student to faculty ratio, the method of instruction is innovative, and there is more individual attention. Students work in small classes and travel into the environment to learn about the history and geology of the island. School is open five days a week from 8:05am until 2:20 pm.

We follow the Bahamian curriculum with classes in English, social studies, math, science, health and family life, art, PE and study skills. We also have an advisory program, tutoring and various extra curricular activities for the students. While we follow the government curriculum, our approach to education is different from Bahamian public schools. The classroom uses more middle school appropriate pedagogy and teachers use a variety of experiential techniques including project based learning, field trips, service learning and explorations in the local environment. Our entire curriculum also supports our schools four core values of integrity, responsible citizenship, academic growth and leadership.

DCMS also runs a Resource Centre that offers an After School Program two days a week and on Saturday mornings for local children who do not attend DCMS. This program works with phonics, reading and homework help for students from grade 2 to 12.

Eleuthera is a beautiful island and the residents are very friendly and supportive of the DCMS. The island is 100 miles long with the average width being 1 mile.

We have students attending the middle school from the settlement of Deep Creek as well as areas forty-five minutes away. The school is recognized as a unique learning opportunity that will prepare students for rigorous academics to contribute to the community and for leadership opportunities. The students are full of energy, eager to learn and very capable in their studies.

We accept letters of interest from candidates with experience teaching in all of our subject areas, with resume and recommendations to: jobs@islandschool.org

We particularly encourage applicants who are from The Bahamas, or who are enrolled at College of the Bahamas.
